Yilan welcomes plan to extend HSR to Taiwan's east coast to boost tourism

The Yilan government is welcoming a planned extension of the high speed rail to the east coast that goes near to Hualien and Taitung.

This is after Minister of Transportation and Communications account HSR as feasible to connect Taipei going to Yilan.

Top spots in east coasts include the Eternal Springs Shrine, Changuang Temple, The Tunnel of Nine Turns, Shakadang Trail, the Qingshui Cliffs, Cimu Bridge, Swallow Grotto and even the Taroko Gorge.

The HSR extension would also help reduce heavy traffic in Hsuehshan Tunnel on the Taipei-Yilan Freeway, while connecting Taipei with eastern Hualien and Taitung counties more easily.

Yilan Secretary-General Lin Mao-sheng says it would not only help alleviate traffic on national freeway number 5, but also help promote the county's tourism industry.

Yilan tourism operators say the planning of the extension must be done carefully, saying there must be transport options available to get visitors from the station to local scenic spots, or else it won't do anything to relieve the current congestion.
