Report: 38% of caregivers and domestic helpers in Taiwan are verbally or physically abused

38 percent of migrant domestic helpers in Taiwan have been verbally or physically abused by employers according to a report released by Garden of Hope Foundation.

The main reason why the victims did not ask for help after being exploited, physically attacked or even sexually assaulted due to the fear that they will lose their jobs.

The report also found that work is very demanding, with 35 percent of domestic
workers reporting they often did not get a full 8 hour's rest.

Remember that it is illegal in Taiwan for all employers to keep the passport, national health insurance card or residency permit of migrant workers.

The current salary for domestic helpers and caregivers in Taiwan is NT$17,000 with 29.61 percent of the respondents received less than that per month.

Any foreign workers who have experienced mistreatment can call a hotline at 1955.

The Garden of Hope Foundation is a non-government, non-profit group established in 1988 to help disadvantaged girls and young women. Their goal is to relieve and rehabilitate misfortune children, youths, women and their families.
