Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised warning to Alert level 2 on Taal Volcano and is spewing ashes in a phreatic eruption.
A Phivolcs alert level 3 signifies increased unrest or a low to moderate level of seismic activity that could eventually lead to an eruption.
A phreatic eruption, also called a phreatic explosion occurs when magma heats ground water or surface water.
“Nagkaroon nga ng unang maliit na pagsabog na 20 to 30 meters. Ito ay related sa hydrothermal activity…phreatic eruption,” according to Renato Solidum, director of Philvolcs via Dobol B sa News TV.
The first phreatic eruption was recorded at around 11:00 a.m and a stronger explosion was recorded around 2:00 p.m. that spewed a kilometer-tall of ash column.
Evacuation of residents that reside around and near the volcano was ordered by the Batangas provincial disaster management officials.
