A drone intrusion was reported at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on New Year's eve, leading to its temporary closure of the airport runways according to the airport management company, reported by CNA.
Flight arrivals to Taiwan's main airport were suspended immediately after a pilot from Cathay Pacific reported at 7 p.m. seeing a drone about 4.5 nautical miles from the airport's glide path, according to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Co. (TIAC).
Runways were closed at the airport for an hour affecting about 12 flights.
Two flights returned to their place of departure, where four flights were diverted to Songshan Airport in Taipei and the other six flights to Kaohsiung International Airport due to insufficient fuel reserve, said TIAC.
Airport operations returned to normal an hour later as no unidentified flying object was seen. The nature of the drone or its ownership still unclear.
