The House Committee on Population and Family Relations on Wednesday approved a bill instituting absolute divorce and dissolution of marriage in the Philippines.
Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, the author of HB 100, said divorce is an exception for irremediably broken and lost marriages.
"No less than the Commissioners of the 1986 Constitutional Commission, which drafted the 1987 Constitution, were unanimous that the Congress has the authority to pass a divorce law under the present Charter," Lagman said.
"The members are Rep. Arlene Brosas, Rep. (Juliet Marie) Ferrer, and Rep. (Ma. Victoria) Umali. We are going to convene as soon as possible,” he added.
Pre-dominantly Catholic Philippines is the only country in the world aside from the Vatican where it remains illegal, the chamber would mount "healthy debates" on the proposal.
