Taiwan on Sunday (Feb 16) reported the nation's first death from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), CNA reported.
"This could be Taiwan's first community transmitted case," according to according to Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung.
The case is also the 19th confirmed case in Taiwan. He is a 60-year-old man and has a history of hepatitis B and diabetes.
He developed a cough on January 27 and went to the hospital due to short breath on February 3. On the same day, he was admitted to intensive care unit and died in the evening of February 15 due to pneumonia and sepsis.
The patient has no recent overseas travel history and no known contact with COVID-19 patients, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung said, adding that the authorities are still working to determine how he became infected.
Additionally, CECC also announced the 20th confirmed coronavirus patient in Taiwan as the younger brother of the 19th patient with whom he lived.
