PH may reach 75,000 COVID-19 cases in 3 months if people deny preventive measures: DOH

Local and international health experts have warned that the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) may spread as much as 75,000 people in the Philippines in the next three months if the virus is not contained.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said in an interview “Kapag hindi tayo gumawa ng drastic actions, in five months we could have 75,000 positive cases.”

The health official said the virus can reach a reproductive rate wherein a person carrying the COVID-19 virus can infect two individuals in a single interaction.

The government has also prohibited any form of mass gatherings to prevent the virus from spreading. This includes closing down shopping malls and suspending religious mass activities.

The state of calamity is effective for 6 months unless the President lifts it earlier or extends it further and the President also asked all government agencies and local government units to mobilize all of the necessary and available resources to undertake measures and “eliminate the threat of COVID-19."
