The Philippines government is now preparing for the immediate repatriation of Filipino workers in Hong Kong after domestic workers were fired by their employers amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.
“We’ll prepare for their repatriation pronto. Deeply disgusted with HK which begged us to let domestic workers return to work,” DFA secretary Teddy Locsin said on Twitter.
"I extracted promise from Chinese ambassador that they’d be given same protection from COVID-19 as HK residents. I shoulda specified ‘from Hongkongers," Locsin added.
At least 196 Filipinos from Macau will be repatriated this week amid the outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and will be treated as persons under monitoring by the Department of Health (DOH).
Previously, the government eased the ban on travel to and from Hong Kong and let Filipino workers return to China’s Special Administrative Regions – Hong Kong and Macau.
