Taiwan confirms 2 new cases of coronavirus bringing thr total to 47

Taiwan confirmed two more COVID-19 coronavirus cases Tuesday, including one who is a family member of two previous cases and an imported case from the Netherlands, bringing the total cases across the country to 47, with one death, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said that day.

The 46th patient, a man in his 20s, is a son of case 34 and the younger brother of case 41, who has no recent history of overseas travel, said Health Minister Chen Shih-chung, who heads the CECC.

He is believed to have contracted the virus due to his close contacts with both cases, since they live under the same roof, Chen said.

The patient had previously been tested twice when he was isolated in a hospital as requested by local health authorities due to his close contact with case 34 whom he took care of while she was hospitalized in a northern Taiwan hospital but both tests were negative, according to Chen.

After he was released from hospital and returned home for another 14 days of home isolation, he developed a cough from March 6-8, according to the CECC.

He was admitted to hospital and put into an isolation ward again last week and was later diagnosed with COVID-19. He is the ninth COVID-19 patient believed to have contracted the virus in the northern hospital, the location of Taiwan's first hospital cluster infection. The CECC said that so far, 447 people who came into contact with patients in the hospital cluster have been identified.

Meanwhile, the 47th case, a man in his 30s in southern Taiwan, is believed to have contracted the virus during a recent business trip to the Netherlands from March 2-5, the CECC said.

The latest patient developed a mild fever and dry cough March 9. Due to his overseas travel history, he was admitted to an isolation ward and had his sample tested by health authorities and test results confirmed him of having contracted the disease, it said.

The health authorities are now closely monitoring the health of his colleagues, family members and those who boarded the same flight with him, the CECC added.
