1,225 patients in US die due to coronavirus in 24 hours, Johns Hopkins' data shows
According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States recorded 1,225 coronavirus deaths on Friday (May 29), bringing its total to 102,798 since the coronavirus outbreak began.
The country has officially logged 1,745,606 total cases of the disease, way higher than any other nation as shown by the Baltimore-based university’s tracker.
The latest numbers came as President Donald Trump said he was severing US ties with the World Health Organization (WHO), accusing it of not doing enough to curb the initial spread of the novel coronavirus and being too lenient with China, the origin of the outbreak.
Meanwhile, states and communities across the US continued phased reopenings. Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Friday, the New York city, the worst-hit by the coronavirus, is “on track” to start reopening by June 8.
