Taiwan to donate more than 7 million face masks around the world in fight of COVID-19
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said on Tuesday (May 5), Taiwan will start its third round of masks donation soon, giving more than seven million surgical masks to countries around the world to help combat the new coronavirus pandemic, CNA reported.
MOFA spokeswoman Joanne Ou said that out of the total 7.07 million masks, 2.28 will be given to United States federal government and American states severely hit by the pandemic.
Member states of the European Union on the other hand, will receive 1.3 million of the said donation, 1.09 million to Taiwan's 15 diplomatic allies, and 1.8 million to some of the countries covered in Taiwan's New Southbound Policy, namely, 18 countries in Southeast and South Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, Ou added.
According to the spokeswoman, the remaining 600,000 face masks will be donated to some African and Middle Eastern countries and to frontline medical staff providing assistance to Syrian refugees.
Earlier, Taiwan have already gave 11 million masks to several countries on its first round of donation and six more million during its second batch of distribution. To sum it up, Taiwan has donated a total of 17 million surgical face masks to countries around the world, according to MOFA.
