Cancer is the top cause of death in Taiwan for the 38th year in a row with cancer-related deaths accounted for 28.6 percent of the country's total mortality in 2019, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said.
Cancer claimed 50,232 lives in 2019 alone as the mortality rate of the disease keeps increasing every year, Taiwan News reported.

The deadliest types of cancer were lung and bronchus cancer, followed by cancers of the liver and bile duct, colon cancer, rectal and anal cancer, breast cancer, oral cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, and ovarian cancer.
Despite its high prevalence, the incidence of cancer in Taiwan has steadily increased. The costs of novel therapeutics, such as targeted therapies were accounted almost two-third of all anti neoplastic agents in Taiwan.
The top 5 leading causes of death last year were cancer, cardiovascular diseases, pneumonia, cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes.
