SURVEY: Almost half of Taiwanese unwilling to defend nation during war
Nearly half of the Taiwanese or 49.1 percent of them are unwilling to fight for their nation in case a war would break out between Taiwan and China, based on the survey conducted by ETtoday.
In the opposite, only 40.9 percent only said that they are willing to defend or would not object to their family's participation in fighting for the nation.
Of these number, mostly were men, between the ages of 30 and 39, and with party affiliations slanting towards the green coalition, including the supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party and New Power Party among others.
Results also showed that about 75 percent of Taiwanese agree with the proposition that Taiwan should extend the period of military conscription instead of adopting a completely voluntary recruitment policy.
The ETtoday survey was conducted between July 15 and 16, among Taiwanese over 20 years of age. It has 2,640 valid samples and a margin of error of plus or minus 1.91 percent with a 95 percent confidence interval.
