More earthquake may occur in Tainan next week according to Taiwan CWB
More moderate earthquakes are likely in Lioujia District in Tainan next week, following a spate of temblors reported in the area on Wednesday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said that day.
Wu Chien-fu, deputy head of the bureau's Seismology Center, said the four earthquakes reported in southwestern Taiwan, ranging in magnitude from 3.8-4.7 at a depth of 10-11.2 kilometers, could trigger more in the near future due to the nature of "earthquake swarms."
The earthquake swarms, which can strike in a short period of time on a relatively small scale, are a result of energy released from breakages in tectonic plates, according to the bureau.
It is rather uncommon for the region to see earthquake swarms, although temblors of at least magnitude 5 have been observed there, Wu said.
The CWB will keep a close eye on the situation in Lioujia, he added. - Central News Agency
