Taiwan records 8th case of hantavirus hemorrhagic fever from a woman in Pingtung


Taiwan recorded its eighth hantavirus hemorrhagic fever case this year from a woman bitten by a rat in Pingtung County, it is now the highest total hantavirus case in Taiwan since 2001.


This year's eighth case of hantavirus is a woman in her 50s who had no recent history of travel abroad and had been mainly staying in her home according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The woman had seen evidence of a rat infestation. She was bitten by a rat last August she began to experience different symptoms like fever, headache, pain in the posterior eye socket, muscle ache and others.

There are now eight confirmed cases of hantavirus this year according to Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data. Four cases have been reported in Kaohsiung, two in Pingtung County, one in New Taipei City, and one in Keelung City.

There were only a total of five cases of hantavirus from 2016 to 2019, hantavirus is commonly transmitted from animals to humans.
