Senators disagree on delaying 13th-month pay amid COVID-19 pandemic

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon both expressed their disagreement regarding the  idea of deferring the 13th-month payout this year because of the pandemic.

According to Pimentel, employees are more "distressed" compared to their “capital providing” employers thus it is not just to defer the payment of the workers' 13th-month pay this year.

Drilon, on the other hand, stressed that the enabling law for the release of employees’ 13th-month pay “does not allow any exemption,” not even a pandemic.

Lawmakers are now urging the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to come up with a solution that is fair enough with the employer and the employee.

This year, many establishment and bussiness have been forced to either cease, suspend, or limit operations  due to the restrictions imposed by the government to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
