Mountains in Taipei including Yangmingshan and Taipingshan in Yilan likely to see snow as cold surge hits Taiwan

There are chances of snow on Dec. 30, in mountains higher than 1,000 meters in northern Taiwan, thanks to abundant moisture and a cold surge, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday.

The cold and wet air will send temperatures to 8-11 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, while mountainous and coastal areas there will see lows between 5-8 degrees, the bureau said.

Wu Der-rong, an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said snow fans could try Datun and Qixing mountains in Taipei from the evening of Dec. 30, but cautioned that the amount is expected to be small.

Besides the north, there are also chances of snow in Taiping Mountain in eastern Taiwan's Yilan County between late Dec. 30 and early Dec. 31, Wu said.

Temperatures in mountains ranging from 800 to 2,000 meters above sea level could dip to minus 2-4 degrees, and as a result, even if there is not enough moisture to form snow, there could be other forms of precipitation, such as rime ice, he said.

According to the CWB, the effect of the cold surge is forecast to last into New Year's Day, when temperatures are expected to rise with clearer skies. -Central News Agency

PH possible to return under lockdown amid new COVID-19 strain, Duterte says

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that the Palace could place the Philippines under lockdown again in case the new COVID-19 strain first detected in the United Kingdom and spreads in the country.

"Actually iyong lockdown is a possibility. I said we are making some projections. But if the severity in numbers would demand that we take corrective measures immediately, then we'll just have to go back to lockdown," said Duterte during a meeting with members of the IATF on COVID-19 and health experts in Malacanang.

The President, however, clarifies that making the country under a lockdown will "depend on the severity in number... in the meantime we are not able to confront them effectively kasi 'pag marami na ang cases with the new variant and we do not have the antidote how to kill those variants, we have a problem there."

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the government might enforce a tighter lockdown, but not after the IATF agrees on a "threshold."

During the same meeting, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on Saturday announced that one of the 79 passengers that arrived in the Philippines from the UK have tested positive for the COVID-19, though it is not yet known whether or not the person was carrying the new strain.

"It also didn’t mean the new strain would cause greater sickness or affect the effectiveness of existing COVID-19 vaccines,” Duque said.

The President, meanwhile, assured that the Department of the Interior and Local Government and local government units would make travelers comply with a mandatory 14-day quarantine as recommended to them by the IATF.

I will not advise because very tricky 'yun.

"If I may suggest, kung may mga ganoong incident, we just witness at saka ‘wag na tayo mag-interfere lalo na pag armed or dangerous 'yung suspect or 'yung mga involved," dag-dag pa nito

I'm telling you!"
