Shopping malls in Taipei's Xinyi District, including Taipei 101 and those operated by Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and the Breeze Group, have decided to cancel parties and outdoor markets on New Year's Eve in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Taipei 101, it originally planned to sell 1,000 tickets for its annual New Year's Eve party on the 89th floor observatory, but decided to cut down the number of attendees to 700 in December, with all the tickets quickly selling out.
However, after Taiwan recorded a domestic COVID-19 case on Dec. 22, its first since since April 12, they decided to cancel the party, and refunds are currently being processed.
Shin Kong Mitsukoshi has also announced that it has canceled an outdoor market it was planning to hold near its A9 and A11 branches on New Year's Eve, which would have featured over 50 food and drink stalls.
A "Star Light Fun Fair" party that same night at the department store's A8 branch has also been canceled to "ensure the health of participants," the department store said on Monday.
New Year's Eve parties at the Wildwood Live Fire Cuisine restaurant at the department store's A9 branch and the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant at the A11 branch will still be held, as those venues can implement required COVID-19 preventive measures, the department store said.
Also on Monday, the Breeze Group said the outdoor markets it had planned at its Nan Shan and Song Gao branches on New Year's Eve have been canceled.
Although the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has said New Year's Eve events can proceed, the company has decided to prioritize disease prevention and cancel all high-risk events, it said. -Central News Agency
