A Taiwanese labor broker has been fined NT$1 million by the Fisheries Agency for deducting too much from the salary of their eight migrant fishery workers for the repayment of loans, CNA reported.
The agency found that the labor broker deducted an extra US$100 from the pay of each of the eight workers, Lin Kou-ping, deputy head of the Fisheries Agency said.
The migrant fishery workers worked on the Lien Yi Hsing No. 12 fishing boat. The over deduction resulted in the NT$1 million fine under Taiwan's Act for Distant Water Fisheries.
The Lien Yi Hsing No. 12 was cited by a international report of withholding wages from its migrant workers.
The Fisheries Agency issued its fine in September after completing its own investigation into allegations by Greenpeace organization that the owner of the Taiwanese vessel Lien Yi Hsing No. 12 abused the eight workers. (Photo CNA)
