Taiwan Railway Taroko Train No. 408 derailed at Daqingshui Tunnel in Hualien County, causing vehicles to hit the tunnel wall and deform 4 to 5 carriages. At present, more than 30 people are known to have lost signs of life.
The Taiwan Railways said earlier that the driver was stuck in the carriage and lost contact.
The express train is carrying about 350 passengers derailed in a tunnel in Hualien, eastern Taiwan.
An emergency task force has been established to investigate the cause of the incident, TRA announced.
The incident occurred on the first day of the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival weekend, according to the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA).
