Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong alarmed by the mandatory vaccination plan

Migrant worker groups in Hong Kong criticized its plans to make coronavirus vaccines mandatory for all foreign domestic helpers.

Those wanting to apply for work visas in Hong Kong or renew their current contracts would need to show they had been vaccinated.

"This is clearly an act of discrimination and stigmatization against migrant domestic workers," Dolores Balladares Pelaez, chair of United Filipinos in Hong Kong

"Again, we are being singled out and targeted," Pelaez added.

Hing Kong officials said domestic workers were deemed "high risk" both because they enter from overseas and often gather outdoors in large numbers on Sundays.

Additionally, migrant groups pointed out that wealthier foreign migrants such as the white-collar financial workers are not being forced to get vaccines.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Consulate is now in coordination with the Hong Kong government regarding a plan for the mandatory vaccination of domestic workers in the special region.
