Vice President - elect Sara Duterte-Carpio will push for mandatory military service for Filipinos aged 18 years old, she will be the secretary of Department of Education (DepEd) soon.
"Presumptive president and I once again talked about how I could help the country. It was decided that I would work on producing skilled learners with the mindset to realize their full potential as individuals,” Duterte-Carpio said.
"Our country needs a future generation of patriotic Filipinos that advocate peace and discipline in their respective communities," she added.
She explained that her proposal is not like the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps — that her father, President Rodrigo Duterte also wanted to be revived but did not materialize — as a mandatory subject, nor would it be a month-long training or for weekends.
Duterte is an Army reservist, said she plans to use the vice president’s office to urge Congress to pass a military conscription law, similar to policies in South Korea and Israel.
She wants mandatory military service for all citizens reaching the age of 18, and it should include disaster-preparedness training.
