Taiwan is considering hiring more Filipino workers, permitting them to stay for a longer period of time, and allowing them to apply for permanent residency.

Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chair Silvestre Bello III said the incentive has already been offered and given to 53 OFWs working I-Mei Foods Co. Ltd.

“In I-Mei Foods alone, about 53 OFWs had been promoted to mid-managerial positions. That gave them the privilege of being exempted from the maximum period of stay in Taiwan,” Bello said.

“And with the assistance of the company, they can apply for permanent residence and invite their families to live with them in Taiwan,” Bello said.

I-MEI production line includes freeze-drying machines, ice storage systems, shelf-life preservation processes,  oil production lines and drone testing sites.

I-Mei’s recruitment process has helped Filipino workers avoid paying large amounts of money to employment agencies to work in Taiwan. The company has hired nearly 10,000 workers from the Philippines since 1993.

I-Mei is a Taiwanese food company founded in 1934. It is well known for its high-quality dairy products and snacks.

According to the Ministry of Labor, at the end of April 2024, there were 154,027 OFWs in Taiwan, accounting for 21% of the total workforce of foreign workers in industry and social welfare. Meanwhile, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) estimates the number of OFWs to be even higher at 200,000.
